Prof. dr. hab. n med. dr. h.c. Alfred Owoc – doctor, social activist.
Since the 1990s, he has been working with German social and health insurance institutions, as well as scientific and social organisations, in particular within a broad range of public health. He created many health plans, including the nutrition and food plans that were implemented especially in Polish and German cross-border areas.
He graduated with a diploma in medicine from Poznan University of Medical Sciences in 1980. He defended his PhD dissertation in 1991. He was awarded with a post-doctoral degree in 1999. In 2015, the President of the Republic of Poland awarded him with a title of the professor of medical sciences. He worked with prominent Polish universities (University of Szczecin, Medical University of Lublin, University of Zielona Góra, Centre of Postgraduate Medical Education in Warsaw, University of Warsaw). He is a founder and rector of a private university – Higher School of Public Health (Lubuska Wyższa Szkoła Zdrowia Publicznego). Between 2001 and 2004 he was the National Consultant in the area of Public Health. Moreover, he was a member of the Public Health Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Sanitary and Epidemiological at the Ministry of Health. In 2016, he was awardedhonoris causa of the Ternopil National Medical University. He is the author and co-author of over 500 publications listed in Polish and international journals and the author of numerous lectures on both Polish and international academic conferences, and the author and co-author of many monographs and chapters in textbooks and books (including points 198,2 IF and 1246 of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education). He managed and completed many projects on the population health conditions, academic entrepreneurship and innovativeness in health care. He is a member of many science councils, Polish and international periodicals related to health care. He supports many regional and national campaigns that promote health. He is the co-author of the current specialist programmes for all specialties in the area of public health (public health and health education, environmental health) for doctors and other medical professionals, as well as other professions in health care. Since 2010 he has been the Polish Association for Social Medicine and Public Health – one of the oldest medical and scientific associations.
